When Paul Samuelson arrived at MIT in 1940, the economics department was a modest graduate program with no doctoral degree of its own. By the time he died in 2009, MIT economics had produced or employed more Nobel laureates than most countries. Background

MIT was chartered in 1861 and admitted its first students in 1865, founded on a model that integrated laboratory instruction with engineering practice. Economics dominates the Nobel roster represented here. Paul Samuelson won the prize in 1970 for the mathematical reformulation of economic theory; Robert Solow followed in 1987 for his growth model. Franco Modigliani-era colleagues gave way to a second generation including Peter Diamond, honored in 2010 for analysis of markets with search frictions, and Eric Maskin, who shared the 2007 prize for mechanism design theory. Daniel McFadden, who taught at MIT before moving west, contributed the discrete choice methods that reshaped applied econometrics. The development economics group built around Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo received the 2019 prize jointly with Michael Kremer for experimental approaches to poverty reduction, and the labor economics group around Joshua Angrist and David Autor has been central to the credibility revolution in empirical work, with Angrist sharing the 2021 prize. Paul Krugman, whose new trade theory earned the 2008 prize, spent significant years on the MIT faculty, as did Olivier Blanchard and the influential macroeconomist Rudi Dornbusch. Physics is represented by several Nobel recipients. Clifford Shull shared the 1994 prize for neutron scattering techniques developed at Oak Ridge and refined at MIT. Frank Wilczek received the 2004 prize for asymptotic freedom in the strong interaction. Wolfgang Ketterle shared the 2001 prize for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates in dilute alkali gases, work conducted in the MIT-Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms. Rainer Weiss shared the 2017 prize for the conception and construction of LIGO, the gravitational-wave observatory whose first detection in 2015 confirmed a prediction Einstein had made a century earlier.

Chemistry has produced a similar cluster. Mario Molina shared the 1995 prize for work on the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer by chlorofluorocarbons. Richard Schrock shared the 2005 prize for olefin metathesis catalysis. K. Barry Sharpless, listed both as Karl Barry Sharpless in some records, won the prize twice, in 2001 and again in 2022 for click chemistry. Moungi Bawendi shared the 2023 prize for the synthesis of quantum dots. George M. Whitesides, better known for his Harvard career, spent his early faculty years at MIT and contributed to the institute's surface chemistry tradition.

The life sciences are represented by Phillip Sharp, who shared the 1993 prize for the discovery of split genes and RNA splicing, and H. Robert Horvitz, who shared the 2002 prize for genetic regulation of organ development and programmed cell death in Caenorhabditis elegans. Mathematics is represented by Daniel Quillen, the 1978 Fields Medalist whose work on higher algebraic K-theory reshaped the field, and by John Nash, whose tenure as an instructor at MIT in the 1950s coincided with the equilibrium concept that later earned him the 1994 economics Nobel.

Krugman has been a long-running newspaper columnist. Solow advised the Kennedy administration's Council of Economic Advisers. Molina played a central role in the negotiations that led to the Montreal Protocol. Sharp cofounded Biogen and later Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, reflecting a broader pattern in which MIT life sciences faculty have founded or advised companies in the Kendall Square biotechnology cluster that grew up adjacent to the campus from the 1980s onward.
